Ten Things to Do on Black Friday Other Than Shopping

November 26, 2024 By Richard James

Black Friday has become one of the biggest spending days of the year. In 2023, Americans spent over $9 billion online alone on Black Friday, not to mention billions more in brick-and-mortar stores.

While retailers celebrate, many consumers end up feeling the weight of their decisions—mounting credit card debt, overflowing closets, and regret over impulsive purchases. The truth is, the promise of “great deals” often leaves us with clutter we don’t need and financial strain we could avoid.

This Black Friday, consider stepping away from the frenzy and focusing on more meaningful ways to spend your time.

Here are ten things to do instead of shopping:

1. Declutter Your Home

Before bringing more items into your space, take the day to sort through what you already have. Donate clothes you no longer wear, organize your kitchen, or declutter toys with your kids. You’ll feel lighter and more in control of your home.

2. Host a Family Game Day

Pull out board games, card decks, or trivia challenges and spend the day laughing and bonding with your family. It’s a fun and cost-free way to create memories without stepping foot in a store.

3. Volunteer in Your Community

Many organizations need extra help during the holiday season. Whether it’s serving meals at a shelter, helping at a food pantry, or organizing donations, giving your time is far more rewarding than battling shopping crowds.

4. Cook a Creative Leftovers Meal

Thanksgiving often leaves us with plenty of leftovers. Challenge yourself to create something new with what you have in the fridge. Invite friends or family to join for a post-Thanksgiving feast.

5. Take a Digital Detox

Turn off your phone, step away from social media, and enjoy a quiet, technology-free day. Read a book, journal, or simply spend time reconnecting with your thoughts and loved ones.

6. Plan Holiday Traditions

Use the day to plan upcoming holiday activities. Write holiday cards, organize a gift exchange, or create a schedule for festive traditions like baking cookies or watching holiday movies.

7. Explore a Local Museum or Library

Indoor activities like visiting a museum, library, or historical site offer a relaxing and educational alternative to shopping. Many places have free or low-cost admission, making it an affordable family outing.

8. Craft Holiday Decorations or Gifts

Get creative with DIY projects that can double as decorations or gifts for loved ones. Making something with your hands can be therapeutic and meaningful, and it’s a great way to keep kids entertained indoors.

9. Watch Classic Movies or Start a New Series

Turn Black Friday into a cozy day at home. Curl up with blankets, make some hot cocoa, and enjoy a movie marathon or start that TV series you’ve been meaning to watch.

10. Write a Gratitude List

Take some time to reflect on what you’re grateful for this year. Writing a gratitude list can shift your mindset away from material things and toward the joys of connection, health, and meaningful experiences.

Black Friday doesn’t have to mean shopping. By stepping away from the consumer frenzy, you can use the day to create meaningful memories, focus on gratitude, and avoid the stress of overspending. These ten activities offer a refreshing alternative to the chaos of the sales—and leave you with more joy, less clutter, and greater peace of mind.
