How to Start a Budget that Actually Sticks

August 28, 2023 By Lawrence H. Stern

Navigating through the world of finances can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to create a budget you can truly live with.

1. Know Your Goal

Why are you budgeting? Maybe it’s for that summer trip, a new car, or just peace of mind. Write down your reason. Having a clear goal will keep you motivated.

2. Track Everything for a Month

Before you can plan for the future, you need to know where your money’s going now. Keep a record of everything you spend money on, big or small, for a month.

3. Group Your Spending

At month’s end, put your expenses into two categories: ‘Must-haves’ like rent and utilities and ‘Nice-to-haves’ like eating out or movies. This will show you what you absolutely need and where you can adjust if needed.

4. Set Spending Limits

Now, decide how much you want to (or can) spend in each category. If you find you’re spending too much in one area, see where you can cut back.

5. Save for Rainy Days

Life is full of surprises, and not all of them are fun. Set aside a bit of money each month for unexpected expenses. Over time, this will give you a safety net.

6. Think Twice Before Big Purchases

We all make impulse buys now and then. If you’re about to buy something pricey, give it a day or two. If you still want it after some thought, go for it!

7. Check In Monthly

Once a month, take a look at your spending. Are you sticking to your plan? It’s okay to adjust your budget as you go.

8. Use Pictures

People love visuals. Whether it’s a chart or a graph, having something to look at can motivate you to stay on track.

9. Keep It Simple

There are loads of budgeting tools out there. Find one that’s easy for you to use and stick with it.

10. Celebrate the Little Things

Every time you hit a small goal, celebrate! It could be sticking to your food budget or saving a certain amount. These little victories will keep you going.

In the end, remember that budgeting isn’t about cutting out everything fun. It’s about understanding where your money’s going and making choices that help you reach your goals. You’ve got this!
